Title: Son of the Mob
Author: Gordon Korman
This book is about a young man who grows up aware his father is a Great Mob Boss in NYC. It details some of his teenage years and is a very amusing tale.
He has to deal with finding a dead body wearing cement shoes in his trunk (the body was put in his trunk by accident and started to smell while he was on a first date with the girl of his dreams), dealing with those who owe the mob lots of money and give it to him instead, finding out the FBI have bugged his bedroom and now know he masturbates..etc etc.
It is a rich tale and I recommend it to all adults with a warped sense of humour like me ;)

Our Player in the Spotlight this month is Bannannaberry, known to most of us as Kelly.
Kelly was born in Saginaw, Michigan, on 2 June 1984 and still lives there.
She is not sure when she joined Mountain, however she knows it was a long time ago. He favorite partners that come to mind are Cuey, Scooter, Jack, Alan and whoever sucks it up to partner with her when she is desperate.
Kelly considers everyone on Mountain to be her friend. She has been fortunate enough to meet many of them at live euchre tourneys.
Kelly is the National Accounts Manager for a sign company – she works with large chains throughout the US to install their signs and service them.
Kelly’s family is very important to her. She has a little brother who is 12 and he is absolutely amazing. Her mom and brother live 8 hours away and she doesn’t see them often. Her dad lives in New Mexico and she sees him about four times a year.
In March this year she married Ryan, who has a four year old daughter named Faith, who keeps them busy – and then there is the king of the household – the dog, Max, who is definitely part of the family.
Kelly has sent some lovely photos of her wedding and of her ‘silly dog, Max’ taking a nap.
HOW I AM SPENDING MY SUMMER/WINTER
Q. What are you reading?
GLOOP: Reading nothing but doing books on tape because its dangerous to read
while driving!
SHAUN: Star Wars: Children of the Jedi
PATTIE: ‘Monster Love’ by Carol Topolski, a horrific story of a child neglected by her parents because they were too wrapped up in each other; and ‘On Chesil Beach’ by Ian McEwan, the story of a man and a woman who get married in the 1960s – both virgins and unable to communicate with each other – and their problems in consummating the marriage.
PEGGY: I am just read (devoured would be accurate) all of Philippa Gregory's books on the Tudor reign/era: The Other Boleyn Girl, The Boleyn Inheritance, The Constant Princess, The Queen's Fool, and The Virgin's Lover. I found King Henry, Anne Boleyn, and all the Tudors to be so engrossing I am now spending hours in the library doing reasearch on this interesting time in history. (OK I know - I'm a nerd).
SALLY: While the rest of the world is enjoying Summer we here in Australia have winter. Unlike the rest of the world we don’t tend to get the extreme cold fortunately. During these winter months I find that I like to sleep in late, do as much as I can during the day then head for bed early with either a good book or just to watch television from a nice warm spot. Unlike another Aussie I know I don’t get the opportunity to flit off to places that are warmer during these months as I am rather tied up with dogs and cats.
Q. What's on your IPOD?
GLOOP: Sirius Radio (Love my Howard!)
SHAUN: Hot Rocks Radio.net and the 70's channel on XM Radio.
PATTIE: I am listening to a great CD ‘Philip Quast – live at The Donmar’.
PEGGY: The musical Oliver! I am choreographing this musical for the Fort Bend Children's theater this summer. (Yea I know- nerdy again).
Q. What are you trying new?
GLOOP: Trying new exercises and walking tapes.
SHAUN: Trying new Slot Machines of course lol.
PATTIE: I am trying to exercise more and to lose weight– have joined a gym and go three times a week.
PEGGY: Lose weight and increase my stamina.
Q. Where are you vacationing?
GLOOP: Vacationing at Linnie_lous in Wisconsin, going to the Wisconsin Dells,
town of the largest waterparks in the world!
SHAUN: Vacationing at Bay Mills Resort and Casino
PATTIE: I am holidaying at Norfolk Island in early July. This was the site of one of the earliest European settlements in the Southwest Pacific. It was established in March 1788 as a convict settlement – a cruel and harsh place. Many of the original buildings have been recreated and it is a fascinating place to visit. The old convict cemetery is particularly interesting.
PEGGY: Cruising with my entire extended family!! I can't wait!

Canadian Day and July 4th Trivia!
Place your mouse over each question to see the answer.
For my first pet of the month article I have interviewed Paula (the_first_poohbear) about her dog Buster.
Buster came into Paula’s house after she decided after several years of not having a dog (her last one had to be put to sleep) that the time had come. She spent many months looking for a suitable dog. Paula suffers from allergies so she needed a dog that wouldn’t set them off. She tried her local pound and the rescue facilities but they only had staffies and part staffies, which of course she couldn’t have.
Finally she decided that a Cairn Terrier was the dog she wanted as they are a small dog and very family orientated and also they don’t shed their hair. Then it was a matter of finding one. She searched the breeders and finally found one 3 hours from her home. Buster was 7 months old when she got him. He wasn’t vaccinated or house trained when he arrived but fortunately that was all sorted out and now Buster is fully vaccinated and is totally clean in the house.
Paula has found that if she feeds Buster “normal” dog food his coat tends to smell so she is at present trying a gluten free diet to see if this will help.
Paula says he is so cute and very friendly especially with young children. He will spend hours chasing a toy and loves it when the kids are happy to throw it for him.
If you don’t play with Buster he will bring the toy to you and put it on your knee. If you don’t get the message he will move the toy and if that fails he will try to get your hand on the toy. Buster loves Billy (Paula’s husband) who will spend hours on the floor hiding Buster’s toy.
Buster needs to have his coat “stripped” twice a year. This means pulling the hairs out from the roots. It takes about 4 hours to do but keeps his coat weatherproof and wiry.
